A quick, classic plate — Britain.
Equipment: Large frying pan
Measures and names
Ingredients
- 2 gammon steaks (ham steaks)
- 2 eggs
- 1 tbsp oil
- 200 g mushrooms, sliced
- 1 tomato, halved
- Black pepper
- Buttered greens, to serve
Method
- Snip the fat edge of each gammon steak in a few places to stop them curling.
- Heat the oil in a large pan and fry the gammon for 3–4 minutes each side, until golden at the edges and cooked through. Move to warm plates.
- Add the mushrooms and halved tomato to the pan and cook for 4–5 minutes, until softened and browned.
- Fry the eggs to your liking in the same pan.
- Serve each steak topped with an egg, with the mushrooms, tomato and buttered greens. No added salt — gammon is salty enough.
Swaps and tips
Gammon is salty, so no extra salt is needed. Skip the traditional pineapple ring to keep the sugar low.
